Palo Alto Local Team

Learn about the team’s priorities and see where you can contribute

Do you want to learn how you can add more bicycle lanes in your neighborhood? Or push your elected officials to prioritize calmer and safer streets for pedestrians and bicyclists? Join the Palo Alto Local Team and become involved in shaping the future of transportation in Palo Alto!

SVBC’s local team structure relies on super volunteers to bring people together, leveraging experiences and knowledge of their respective communities to identify ways to work together and create safer communities for all.

No experience necessary. No big time commitment. We can train you on the basics of developing an advocacy campaign in our Advocacy 101 course. The local team is also fortunate to have several members of the Palo Alto Pedestrian and Bicycle Advisory Committee as members that bring decades of knowledge and experience.

The Palo Alto Local Team meets via Zoom every third Wednesday of the month from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. You can begin receiving updates on our events, campaigns, and meetings by joining the online discussion through our Google group.

Not sure how much time you can contribute? We understand life happens and keeps us all very busy. Our team leads will do their best to find a role that meets your goals and availability!

The Local Team’s Plans to Improve Safety and Bicycle Infrastructure

The Palo Alto Team has an extensive list of goals and campaigns for 2022. However, with limited capacity, the team can only prioritize as many projects as our super volunteers can handle.

Join and effectively advocate for improved bicycle infrastructure and the many Capital Improvement Program projects the city is developing.

The following is a short list of some of the campaigns and improvements the Palo Alto Local Team has prioritized in 2022:

  • Establishing a Safe Systems Approach in Palo Alto - SIGN OUR PETITION HERE

  • Safe Routes to School

  • Adding more protected bike lanes on El Camino Real in Palo Alto

  • Improving the Charleston-Arastradero Corridor

  • Bike to Wherever Day Outreach

  • Adding more protected bike lanes on California Avenue

Meet the Local Team Leader

When Frank Viggiano’s parents left their homeland of Italy, they briefly lived in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Chicago before settling in Palo Alto, where they felt they had found paradise. Frank grew up in the Palo Alto of the ‘60s and early ‘70s, with his bicycle providing him the freedom to independently roam around town as a teen.  After college he returned to the newly coined “Silicon Valley” as a software engineer, with his longest gigs at ROLM/IBM/Siemens and then at Cisco.

Along the way Frank and his family spent two years living near Munich, Germany, further spurring his interest in communities more oriented towards active transportation.  Eventually he and his family found their way back home in Palo Alto, in the same neighborhood he rode his his bicycle in as a teen. Frank is recently retired and has been spending a good chunk of his time working toward a Palo Alto and Bay Area that is less dependent on the automobile, with less of the pollution and endless expanses of asphalt that comes with the auto-based lifestyle.
