Spare Tube TeamReports To: Program Director/Program Manager

Status: Part-time, seasonal side hustle

Location: San Jose, CA

Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition (SVBC) is a non-profit membership-based organization that seeks to create a healthy community, environment, and economy through bicycling for people who live, work, or play in San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties. We have a goal of 10% of trips taken by bicycle by 2025. The mobility world is rapidly changing with e-scooters, self-driving vehicles, and lower auto-ownership rates. It is an exciting time to be working at an organization that is making sure we get around with joy as opposed to stress. SVBC has a problem we’re hoping you can help solve. Our work ebbs and flows unpredictably, which at times creates strain on existing staff. For example, in some months, the organization has too many bike parking events to manage and not enough staff. In the lead up to Bike to Work Day, the organization teaches 25 commute workshops all around Silicon Valley. And at the end of the school year, SVBC is inundated with requests from schools for bike rodeos. While we do our best to anticipate and schedule events so that they don’t all land on the same day, it doesn’t always work out that way. We’re looking for folks who are interested in picking up work during those times when SVBC has too many requests to handle. If you love teaching kids to ride, parking bikes and overall, inspiring more folks to ride for everyday use, SVBC could use you as a part of what we call our Spare Tube Team. This is a team of folks who love inspiring people to ride and are looking for a little side hustle to supplement their income. The three main programs that the Spare Tube Team assists with are:Valet Bicycle Parking: At various events, SVBC is hired to park and watch over bikes. Levi’s Stadium, for example, hires SVBC to provide bike parking at every event. This position includes full responsibility for the security of bicycles, supervision of bicycle parking volunteers, and solving problems as they arise. See more details here.

Commute Workshops: On an ongoing basis, SVBC goes out to companies to talk about bike commuting. Employees who are interested in commuting by bike attend the workshop to learn things like, how to get your bike ready, what to wear, how to keep yourself safe while riding and more. Spare Tube Team members would be expected to learn to teach these one-hour classes and plug in when needed. Members are usually needed in the lead up to Bike to Work Day in May. Youth-Based Education: SVBC runs several programs that involve teaching kids and families to ride bikes and leading bike rides. Spare Tube Team members would be expected to step in and assist fellow SVBC program staff to assist in the delivery of these types of events.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Schlepping bike parking equipment to events

  • Managing volunteers with assistance from SVBC staff

  • Tracking usage and sales, if any, at each event.

  • Preparing information for reports for each event to be utilized for future planning

  • Effectively communicating the mission, vision, and programs of SVBC and representing SVBC professionally in the community

  • Responding in a timely fashion to SVBC staff regarding staffing/scheduling for events

Qualifications

  • Being a League Certified Instructor is a nice thing to have but not essential

  • Experience working with volunteers

  • Knowledge of contemporary bicycling practices and safety regulations in order to teach others in a workshop setting

  • Ability to speak in public in front of an audience, ideally in an entertaining and compelling way

  • Current, clean California drivers’ license

  • Able to lift 50 pounds

  • Access to car and cell phone

  • Patience, since you could find yourself attempting to corral a classroom full of antsy kids

  • Flexibility and an ability to welcome, with a positive attitude, last-minute scheduling requests

  • Being an enthusiastic ambassador of SVBC’s mission and vision

Compensation: Hourly rate of $25How to Apply: Send a compelling cover letter and resume, saved in PDF format, to jobs@bikesiliconvalley.org.
