Bike to Work Day 2009

The San Francisco Bay Area’s 15th annual Bike to Work Day took place on Thursday, May 14. An estimated 150,000 commuters and students hopped on their bikes - instead of into their cars. The event featured about 200 "energizer stations" sprinkled around the Bay Area to recruit, reward and refuel participants. Organizers expected the warm weather, and the growing popularity of bicycling in the Bay Area, to draw record crowds of riders.

Bike to Work Day 2008

Spurred on by skyrocketing gas prices, concerns about global warming and the fact that it was also an official “Spare the Air” day, a record number of cyclists turned out for Bike to Work Day on May 15, 2008, according to event organizers. Concerned by predictions of high temperatures, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District issued a Spare the Air advisory for May 15, the first of the 2008 smog season. The call to ride public transit and bikes instead of driving no doubt helped to boost participation in Bike to Work Day, despite the sweltering heat.

Bike to Work Day 2007

On the 13th Bike to Work Day, $4 a gallon gas prices and the crippled MacArthur Maze freeway interchange motivated many newcommers to bike to work. Over 50,000 complimentary Clif energy bars, 30,000 bags and tens of thousands of bagels were given out.

Bike to Work Day 2006

With gas prices on the rise and Bay Area residents reveling in the end of the season's relentless rains, 50,000 to 100,000 cyclists biked to work in the Bay Area in 2006.

Bike to Work Day 2005

The 11th Bike to Work Day attracted 50,000 to 100,000 commuters with more than 180 energizer stations situated along major bike commute routes throughout the region. A little rain didn't stop people from pedaling to work. Rain didn’t even deter San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom from riding his bike to City Hall the morning of May 19.
